We currently play for two hours on Monday and Wednesday evenings at Sport Wales National Centre in Sophia Gardens, CF11 9SW:
Mondays 8:30 to 10:30pm (five courts in the Jubilee hall)
Wednesdays 6:30 to 8:30pm (two courts in the main hall)
We mostly play doubles, with members mixing up partnerships throughout the evening. For those who want to improve their abilities and focus on specific skills, we regularly offer coaching sessions with a BWF level 1 certified coach – at no additional cost.
After the first free session, we operate on a pay-as-you-play basis, currently costing:
£5 per two-hour session
£3 if only playing for an hour
Members are asked to transfer their weekly subs directly into the club bank account, details of which will be given to new joiners.
The current membership fee is £15 per year, which contributes directly to our Badminton Wales association fees, playing equipment and helps ensure we can secure court bookings in advance.
We love welcoming new members, though we have had to introduce a waiting list due the growth of the club and our court capacity.
If you want to join the waiting list, please fill out our expression of interest form and we will get in touch as soon as we can to invite you to a session. The first session is free!
For safety prior to playing, we will undertake a quick assessment of your ability to ensure we pair you up with appropriate members and make your sessions at the club more enjoyable. A member of the club should introduce you to one of the committee members who will ask about your playing experience, your understanding of the rules and make sure you have the equipment you need.
This also gives you the opportunity to ask us anything also about the club or raise any concerns, questions or queries you may have before playing. We are also happy to offer some coaching on badminton basics to get you started.
If you are a complete novice, please don’t worry – we will help you every step of the way with rules and court etiquette, as well as helping improve your skills. Enthusiasm and willingness to learn is usually all you need to increase your confidence on the court.
Once you feel ready to formally join, a member of the committee will send you a link to the membership registration form to fill in and bank details to pay the annual membership fee (this is on a sliding scale if you join part way through the year).
On completing the membership form and paying the fee, you will then be added to the club WhatsApp group – where all club news, social events and general banter is posted!
